Using Chunks in Opinion Writing and Speaking

Opinion essays and speaking responses are ideal platforms for practising English chunks—ready-made expressions that improve fluency, coherence, and confidence. When learners consciously recycle the same chunks in both writing and speaking, they begin to sound more natural and advanced.

In this blog post, I demonstrate how the same set of chunks can be used effectively in:

  • an IELTS Writing Task 2 opinion essay, and

  • an IELTS Speaking Part 3 response

All chunks are highlighted in bold to help learners notice, memorise, and reuse them.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Question

Some people prefer to spend their leisure time indoors, while others enjoy spending it outdoors.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Model Essay (with Chunks in Bold)

When it comes to the choice between spending leisure time indoors or outdoors, individuals differ significantly in their preferences. While some people revel in outdoor activities, others find solace in staying indoors. Personally, I prefer to spend my free time indoors, and this inclination stems from two primary reasons, which will be discussed below.

To begin with, indoor leisure is a more cost-effective option. Remaining within the confines of one’s home eliminates expenses related to transportation, dining, and entertainment. In addition, it can shield us from a potentially polluted external environment and prevent us from being inadvertently exposed to shopping centres that encourage impulsive spending, often resulting in spontaneous purchases. Reflecting on my own experiences, I recall a holiday trip where my budget was exceeded due to unplanned expenses, reinforcing the financial advantages of indoor activities.

Another important consideration is safety. Staying indoors provides a more assured sense of safety and well-being, whereas the carefree enjoyment associated with outdoor leisure can sometimes divert our attention from maintaining good health practices. On one occasion, my friends and I were absorbed in the relaxed ambiance of a long drive, allowing our exuberance to culminate in an unfortunate collision with another vehicle. This incident became a stark reminder of the potential hazards of outdoor activities, which may lead to endangering ourselves and others.

In conclusion, although the allure of outdoor endeavors is undeniable, the benefits of indoor leisure clearly outweigh those of outdoor pursuits. Indoor activities are a preferable choice as they offer a more secure and economically sensible option, whereas outdoor activities often come with elevated costs and potential risks. For these reasons, I firmly believe that spending leisure time indoors is the wiser decision.

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Sample Response

Question

Do you think people today prefer indoor activities more than outdoor activities? Why or why not?

Model Response (Using the Same Chunks)

Well, when it comes to the choice between indoor and outdoor activities, I think many people today are increasingly inclined towards indoor leisure. Personally, I find solace in spending time at home rather than going out, and this inclination stems from both financial and safety concerns.

To begin with, indoor activities are often a more cost-effective option. People can relax within the confines of their homes without being inadvertently exposed to places that encourage impulsive spending, such as shopping malls, which usually lead to spontaneous purchases. From my perspective, this makes indoor leisure a preferable choice for many families.

Moreover, indoor activities offer a more assured sense of safety and well-being. Outdoor activities may provide carefree enjoyment, but they can also divert our attention from maintaining good health practices and expose us to potential hazards, sometimes endangering ourselves and others. Reflecting on my own experiences, I believe such risks are a stark reminder of why people may choose to stay indoors.

That said, the allure of outdoor endeavors still exists, especially for those who revel in adventure and physical activities. However, in my opinion, the advantages of indoor leisure generally outweigh those of outdoor pursuits, as outdoor activities often come with elevated costs and potential risks.
