Chunks in TOEFL Speaking
Introduction
In this post, I have practiced using useful lexical chunks for TOEFL Speaking Part 1 questions. Notice how I have used them naturally in context. After each chunk, I have indicated whether it is Intermediate or Advanced so you can focus on the expressions that best match your current level.
TOEFL Speaking: Model Answers
1. Study Habits: Group vs. Alone
I prefer to study for exams rather than (Intermediate) study alone. I feel this way for two reasons. First, studying in a group makes learning more effective because there are constant interactions that help us clarify the topics. For example, while preparing for a Linguistics exam during my Master’s Degree, I studied in a group with my friends and, as a result (Intermediate), my preparation improved and I secured a good grade. Second, in a group, we can continue studying for long hours without losing interest (Intermediate), thanks to (Intermediate) the company of friends. For instance, I cannot study alone for more than two hours, but I can study even four hours at a stretch (Advanced) with my group. For these reasons, studying in a group is more preferable for me.
2. Keeping Up with the News
I prefer watching TV news every day rather than only occasionally. First, it helps us stay updated on national and international affairs, which allows us to be well-informed (Intermediate) and knowledgeable people (Intermediate). For example, I watch the news daily and, as a result (Intermediate), I often stand out (Advanced) among my colleagues. Second, watching news programs regularly enriches our vocabulary. My habit of watching English news daily has made my vocabulary more varied. For these aforementioned reasons (Advanced), I prefer to watch news programs every day.
3. Domestic Skills for Youth
I strongly agree that young people should learn domestic skills like cooking. First, such skills make us more practical people (Intermediate), making daily life much easier. For example, since I learned how to sew when I was young, I can now repair my own clothes. Second, these skills help us be more supportive (Intermediate) to our families. For instance, when my wife gets sick, I cook food myself because I already learned cooking earlier. For those aforementioned reasons (Advanced), I believe it is essential to acquire basic domestic skills.
4. Experienced vs. Young Doctors
I agree with the notion that experienced doctors are better than young doctors. First, their long practice allows them to provide the best possible treatment (Intermediate). For example, when I had a stomach ache, a young doctor's treatment was temporary, but an experienced doctor solved the issue. Second, seasoned doctors are more calm and confident (Intermediate) when handling patients. For instance, an experienced doctor managed to convince (Intermediate) my grandfather to cooperate with treatment. For these aforementioned causes (Advanced), I firmly believe experienced doctors are better.
5. Roommate Qualities: Cleanliness
When choosing a roommate, cleanliness is of utmost importance (Advanced) to me. First, a clean room creates a pleasant ambience (Advanced) for living and studying. For example, when my roommate and I keep our apartment tidy, we can study for longer periods without feeling bored (Intermediate). Second, I cannot tolerate a messy room. I truly cannot stand clumsiness (Advanced). Therefore, when it comes to selecting a roommate, I always prioritize cleanliness.
6. TV Shows for Students: Debates
If there were a TV show for students, I would choose students’ debates on political and social topics. First, debates help students stay aware of current affairs (Intermediate). Second, debates provide knowledge beyond textbooks. A bookish student (Advanced) who ignores social issues may fail to become a socially fit (Intermediate) individual. For those aforementioned reasons (Advanced), I would prefer watching debates.
7. Dating and Language Barriers
I don’t think dating someone who speaks a different language is a good idea. First, the language barrier (Intermediate) makes communication difficult. For example, I once liked a foreign girl, but our languages were incomprehensible (Advanced) to each other. Second, dating requires effective communication; without it (Intermediate), the whole concept seems awkward. Everything ended in vain because our conversation could not continue.
8. Real Estate vs. Stocks
In my opinion, investing in a house is far better than investing in the stock market. First, it guarantees certainty of benefits (Advanced). In contrast, the stock market is prone to uncertainty (Advanced) and often feels like gambling. Second, it is unwise to risk our hard-earned money (Intermediate). For example, my uncle invested his retirement savings in stocks and regretted it after losing heavily. For these reasons, I strongly prefer investing in a house.
9. Financial Habits: Saving 5%
I think saving 5% of your salary monthly is a wise idea. First, savings help in times of emergency (Intermediate). Second, without savings, our financial condition will not be sound (Intermediate). One of my co-workers had to borrow money when his child needed treatment because he was indifferent towards saving (Advanced). Therefore, I consider it wise to save at least 5% of our salary.
10. Memorable Milestones
The most remarkable moment (Intermediate) in my life was passing my SLC exam with flying colours (Advanced). When I received my result, my happiness knew no bounds (Advanced). I was truly over the moon (Advanced). This milestone helped me embark on (Advanced) a glorious academic journey. Even today, my heart leaps up with pride (Advanced) when I recall it.
11. Teamwork in Professions
Certainly, I prefer working in a group. First, teamwork prevents monotony (Advanced) and keeps us motivated. For example, brainstorming often produces better ideas (Intermediate). Second, teamwork improves our interpersonal skills (Advanced). During a community project, our group participation made the project exceptionally successful (Advanced).
12. Online vs. Traditional Learning
I prefer online courses to traditional classrooms. First, they are more convenient (Intermediate) because we can study from home. Second, technology makes learning more student-friendly (Advanced) and engaging. For instance, when I use virtual games, students become enthusiastic. Therefore, I prefer the pedagogy of online instruction.
13. Pandemic Reflections
During the pandemic, I tried to make the most of my time (Advanced). Before the lockdown, I was too busy with work, but the stay-at-home order gave me the opportunity to upgrade my academic capability (Advanced). This later helped me stand out (Advanced) among my co-workers. In fact, my free time during the pandemic turned out to be a blessing in disguise (Advanced).
Strategic Breakdown: Why These Answers Work
Logical Structure: Each answer uses "First," "Second," and "For these reasons." This makes it easy for the TOEFL grader to follow your logic.
Specific Examples: Notice how phrases like "Linguistics exam" or "retirement savings" provide concrete details.
The Chunk Advantage: Using Advanced Chunks like "at a stretch" or "prone to uncertainty" moves you away from simple vocabulary into the high-score range.
Conclusion
Practising TOEFL Speaking Part 1 with chunks is one of the most effective ways to boost fluency (Intermediate), sound more natural (Intermediate), and organize ideas coherently (Advanced).
Remember: In speaking, chunks are "breath groups." Try to say "blessing in disguise" as one single, smooth word rather than three separate words. This will significantly improve your delivery score!
