Chunks for Transformation and Resilience

Introduction

Personal growth is a journey. Whether you are preparing for a speaking test (IELTS/TOEFL) or writing a motivational story, you need specific "chunks" to describe overcoming obstacles.

In this post, we explore powerful expressions to help you talk about resilience and starting fresh.

1. The Transformation Toolkit

 Category A: Starting Fresh

·       Turn over a new leaf: To begin behaving in a more responsible or positive way.

·       Let bygones be bygones: To forget past disagreements and move on.

·       Let go of the past: To stop dwelling on events that hold you back.

Category B: Regaining Control

·       Pull yourself together: To recover control of your emotions after a shock.

·       Get your act together: To become organized and start performing effectively.

·       Bounce back: To recover quickly from a setback or illness.

Category C: Pushing Boundaries

·       Step out of your comfort zone: To do things that you are not comfortable with in order to grow.

·       Break new ground: To do something innovative or pioneering.

·       Take the plunge: To finally do something decisive that you've been nervous about.

2. Real-Life Context: From Setback to Success

After losing my job last year, I was completely devastated. I felt it was the end of the world. That said, deep inside, I knew I had to bounce back.

It wasn’t easy; it felt like an uphill battle, but I got my act together and resolved to turn over a new leaf. This required me to step out of my comfort zone and take the plunge into freelancing. Slowly but surely, I regained my confidence. Now, I’ve broken new ground professionally by starting my own agency. I’ve let go of the past, and I'm focused on the present.

Contextual Dialogue: The Comeback

Characters:

  • Maya: A friend who is feeling stuck after a failed project.

  • Sam: A supportive mentor.

Maya: I just feel like I’ve lost my momentum, Sam. Every time I try to start something new, I just think about how badly I failed last time.

Sam: I understand, but you can’t stay in that headspace forever. It’s time to let go of the past and stop letting those old mistakes dictate your future.

Maya: I know, but it’s hard. I feel like I’m a mess right now.

Sam: Listen to me: you need to pull yourself together. You’ve always been someone who can bounce back from a challenge. This is just a temporary setback, not the end of the road.

Maya: You're right. I’ve been staying inside too much. I think I need to step out of my comfort zone and maybe even take the plunge by applying for that leadership role I saw online.

Sam: Exactly! That would be a perfect way to turn over a new leaf. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself—that's how you’ll eventually break new ground in your career.

Maya: Thanks, Sam. I needed that. It’s time I got my act together and started looking forward instead of backward.

3. Practice Exercise: Fill in the Blanks

Fill in the blanks using the most appropriate chunk from the list above:

1.   After the business failed, it took him months to __________ and find a new project.

2.   She finally decided to __________ and quit her habit of procrastinating.

3.   I had to __________ and give a presentation in my second language.

4.   The researchers __________ in the field of AI with their latest discovery.

5.   Stop crying and __________! We have a deadline to meet.

6.   It’s high time we __________ and focused on our future goals.

4. Challenge Activity

Your Story of Change: Write a short story (100–150 words) about a major life change. Try to use at least five chunks from this post.

Tip: Start by describing a "down" moment (using Category B), and finish with an "up" moment (using Category C).

Share your story in the comments—I’d love to read your journey!
